I know there are quite a few Florida residents on the board so wth that in mind...

The is a VERY good possibility that my company will move me to a project in St. Pete (Thought it was in Bartow) in the next 6 weeks or so. So, if anyone has information on:

1. Housing costs for a single male.
2. Locations for living (i.e. Good neighborhoods and places to avoid).
3. Cost of living.
4. Crime problems.
5. Gun Ranges, stores, and 2A friendliness (Okay. This should probably be first.)
6. Things to do.
7. Single female situation (Wait. On second thought. This should be first.)
8. Any other information that is useful.

Just found out the project is actually in St. Pete. So, same questions. Different location.

its warmer than VT and the hurricane, flood and tornado risk is higher. You are also at far greater risk of shark or gator attack in FL than in VT.

You're lucky its St pete. Bartow sucks on all your above questions. Only has one psuedo gun shop that barely fits the description. The only SWF's you'll find are single for a reason (i.e., gotta face that'll make a train take a dirt road). Lakeland/Winter Haven have a couple of Class 3 dealers with a moderate selection.

St. pete is close enough to Tampa (just cross a bridge) and Tampa is loaded with everything you could ever want. Class 3 dealers, oodles of gunshops, and you'll be close enough to Ibor to find all the SWF's you could ever want. Cost of living in Hillsborough County (Tampa, Plant City, Ibor, etc) is decent. It would be cheaper for housing (apts, houses) to live in Polk County (Lakeland, WH, Bartow, Mulberry) and take the 30 min or so shot down Interstate 4 or HWY 60 to St. Pete. Property taxes and C.O.L are lower in Polk in general compared to Hillsborough. There's a couple of indoor ranges and outdoor ranges within reasonable driving distance from St pete with Ruskin being one of the better ones (IPSC/3-gun Comps). Hillsborough is a little more of a pain (word of mouth from buddies over there) to get a form 4 signed off on but its still not bad, and faster than most places. Polk is pretty good about it too (im told its way easier than Hills).

If you're feeling adventurous, you can drive about 1.5/2.0 hrs to Orlando and theres a dozen more nifty gunshops and a Bass-pro. Got my 5.7 and ps90 over there. Theres a 1000 yd range in Myaka (sp?) thats about an hour from St Pete. I shoot over there often (but I never bother to ask about how to spell the town's name, I know).

Hope that helps.

oops, forgot the crime part. It's all the same anywhere ya go round here. I tend to think Polk's better than Hills as far as the crime thing goes, it all depends on the area you choose. I'd steer clear of the slums, ghettos, and political party headquarters if you're worried :p .

As far as things to do, Tampa's home to the Bucs, a billion good restaurants, Busch Gardens and various other theme parks. Orlando's got even more. Ibor is night club central. So you wont have a shortage of things to do.

Am I sounding like a Tour guide yet?

for the party scene, Tapma's the next best thing to Miami, which is the next best thing to not being in florida.. some pretty cool folks there actually, especially in Ybor, though it's probably more commericalised there now than when i used to spin at the Masquerade (which i think is still there) back in '86.. and it's a college town too, so good radio stations stuff for the pre-fossilisation crowd.. St Pete is post-foss, and generally to be avoided.

for cheapness without heading east, try Lutz, which is just north of Tampa city limits.
