US-M1 57mm Anti-Tank cannon. A buddy of mine has one. It's quite a thing to pull the lanyard on.

As long as a good mechanic knows how to keep them up and running and the crew is expertly trained in their use, the guns are safe. We've fired the 57 a lot with no issues. It looks to me like there was a serious mechanical issue with this gun. It discharged as soon as the breech block closed.

ARTY 101: Never operate or load from directly behind the recoiling mechanism of the gun.

I'll bet these guys never went to Ft. Sill.
