Obama to Saints: 'This fairy tale ends'

The Associated Press

January 15, 2007, 5:45 PM CST

New Orleans' football season is all but over.

That's the message Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has for Saints fans when their team comes to Chicago for Sunday's NFC championship game.

"The Bears are going to the Super Bowl," a gleeful Obama told reporters Monday outside a church in suburban Chicago. "I am happy for New Orleans. I think it's a wonderful story for their city, but this fairy tale ends when they come to Chicago."

The winner of the Saints-Bears matchup will head to Miami to play either the Indianapolis Colts or New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Feb. 4.

The athletic prediction from the state's junior senator, considered an early favorite for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, struck little fear into Louisiana's congressional delegation.

"All I'll say is that the Saints reflect the same spirit of hope and recovery that the people of New Orleans have," said Adam Sharp, a spokesman for Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. "Every challenge that comes up and is put in front of them, they surmount every one. And we're looking forward to the game."

Obama said he was pleased with quarterback Rex Grossman during the Bears' 27-24 overtime win against Seattle.

"The defense bent but it did not break," he said. "And Grossman looked all right."

I think he was right, I am disappointed...... I wanted a couple more touchdowns!!! BEAR DOWN! Oh by the way, Reggie Bush is a punk for his classless move. What an idiot celebrating before even getting a lead and then getting routed, trying to insult Brian Urlacher no less. What gives him that right? Oh yeah...because he gets a lot of hype. I forgot. The Bears? No hype, just hardnosed defense and a great run game.

It all depends on which Rex shows up.

I see you're from Wisconsin so your doubting of Rex is a real shocker. Same old thing every week.....getting real old Green Bay fan. Tell New Orleans that. Find a new way to rip the Bears. We will take it right to the Super Bowl where you and the Packers can watch our team play from home. Bears win this one.....27-24!

I AM a diehard Bears fan but I think hes right. In ALL the games they lost it was Grossman's fault. Not to mention the almost loss to AZ. In the game Vs. AZ it was the defense and special teams that Won THAT game. But he does have good games as well. when Rex shows up it all good. But when Grossman shows it is a long game.

BTW Btown no need for the congrats I've been lurking for a while

No way... The Bears have a QB. We have a fine young QB who is in his first full season and is 15-3 and has taken his team to a Superbowl. He has lost some games (3), but he has won some too. Since Harris went down the defense has been giving up some serious points, yards, and big plays. Rex won some of those games too. Did you watch the Seattle playoff game? Say what you want but Rex won that game and played stellar. The D made some key stops and Rex had a turnover I blame on him, but he won that game. He still played well against NO, but he did start slow, but made key clutch plays when he had too. In all of the history of the NFL never has a QB been so maligned and under the microscope as Rex and all he does is win. Yeah, fans like you expect Joe Montana every game, but just imagine if Rex played like Brady or Manning has been through most of the playoffs. Fans like you would demand he be benched. The criticism is way too much and is way unfair. Some of it is fair as I have been the first to give some of it. Yes he needs to stop having the complete meltdowns and be a bit more consistent. But in the playoffs he has been nothing but solid. To say the Bears need a QB is ridiculous. Maybe Green Bay needs a QB, but the Bears have found the QB of now and the future. He's only gonna get better. Tell me, which QB do you want? Manning? Brady? Maybe Roethlisberger? I know, you want Drew Brees. Brady is great, but has not played to your gold standard in this playoffs. Manning? Great QB, starting the same amount of Superbowls as Rex and his numbers are less than your gold standard in all of his playoff appearances except a few so/so outings. Big Ben? He got one, but HE didn't get it now did he? He was little more than a game manager. Oh and Brees. He will be watching Rex play. Or do you think we should draft one? Or maybe start Orton or Griese next year? Do we trade Rex? Nah, I say we should leave the kid alone and let him play his Superbowl before we tear him down.

YEAH, YEAH, YEAH

The Bears kicked some major butt and we can't even get props for that :p
All the preshow crap had New Orleans winning last week's game. And they were WRONG too. We have an awsome team. Win or lose come game day, I can say that the BEars are my hometown team :D

This is true. Let's cross our fingers that last weeks Rex will show up to the game and not the Rex from the Green Bay game :D
