Houston police shot and killed a man in southwest Houston early today after he reportedly threatened a wrecker driver and then officers with an automatic pistol.
The man, shot twice in the side, died during surgery at Ben Taub Hospital, authorities said. His identity is still unknown.
Houston Police Department Capt. Dwayne Ready said the incident began about 2:50 a.m. as a wrecker driver was traveling down Richmond.
The wrecker driver told officers that a man wearing only boxer shorts jumped in the back of his wrecker and ranted loudly as he waved his pistol in the air. The driver slammed on his brakes, knocking the man out of the truck, and the driver pulled away to call police on his cell phone.
When two officers, C.C. Robertson and C.C. Lyall of the Westside Patrol Division, arrived at the shopping center parking lot in the 9400 block of Richmond where the gunman was last seen, they found him still waving his pistol.
Both officers ordered the man to stop and drop the gun, Ready said. When the man instead pointed it at the officers, both fired, Ready said.
Ready said the motive for the original confrontation with the wrecker driver is unknown. The driver said he had no dealings with the man prior to their confrontation.
The shooting will be investigated by the homicide and internal affairs divisions of HPD and by the police integrity division of the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
Robertson, 56, joined the Houston Police Department in December 1985. Lyall, 37, joined in March 1998
