Va. Officials Object to Proposed Military Theme Park
Tuesday, August 08, 2006
Associated Press

FORT BELVOIR, Va. The Army is considering a proposal to allow a private developer to build a military theme park that would include "4D" rides and bars including a "1st Division Lounge," local officials said.

The massive entertainment and hotel complex next to a national Army museum could draw more than 1 million people a year but Fairfax County authorities are objecting because of already traffic-clogged roads surrounding the proposed site.

Universal City Property Management III, of Orlando, Fla., submitted the unsolicited proposal for the theme park last year.

"You can command the latest M-1 tank, feel the rush of a paratrooper freefall, fly a Cobra Gunship or defend your B-17 as a waist gunner," according to the proposal, which was obtained by The Washington Post.

County officials have no authority over the Army's decision because the site is federal property. County Supervisor T. Dana Kauffman said he thought the entertainment concept died last year and said he had no interest in turning a military museum into "Disney on Rolling Road."

But the Army notified the county last week it is planning to move the military museum from Fort Belvoir to a site a few miles away that would be large enough for the entertainment complex.

The Army is studying "a visitor destination concept" for the museum, a spokesman said, but provided no details and would not comment on the Universal City proposal.

I think it would be cool.

Trainee cop charged over replica gun

Article from: AAP

A NEW South Wales police student has been charged and booted out of the Goulburn training college for turning up to training with replica guns.

Police said the 24-year-old Wakeley man was charged with possessing prohibited weapons after attending the NSW Police College with illegal weapons including a replica pistol with a laser sight and a replica sub-machine gun.

A police spokeswoman said the trainee had been formally introducing himself to other students at a brief presentation session when he produced the weapons.

"He used them as props," the spokeswoman said. "He may have thought they'd help give him a more effective presentation."

She said detectives from Goulburn Local Area Command had gone to the student's home in Goulburn on July 18 and seized the illegal weapons.

They also found a light-armoured vest at the home.

The student was removed from the Constable Education Program the same day and dismissed from the college, the spokeswoman said.

Police today issued the man with a notice to appear in Goulburn Local Court on September 20 on three counts of possessing a prohibited weapon.

Man dies using sledgehammer on grenade
From correspondents in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Article from: Reuters

A BRAZILIAN man died when he tried to open what police believe was a rocket-propelled grenade with a sledgehammer in a mechanical workshop on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Another man who was in the workshop at the time of the explosion was rushed to a hospital with severe burns, a police officer told Reuters.

The workshop was destroyed and several cars parked outside caught fire.

Police found several unexploded army issue rocket-propelled grenades in the workshop.

They believe the ammunition had been brought there by scavengers wanting to sell them as scrap metal, but they also are investigating a possible link to Rio's heavily armed drug gangs who often raid military bases.

A military theme park in the heart of FFX would be really neat, cause that's where I live. I'd go there at least once a year (unless it came out lame).

In the last couple of days, it's been on the local news that the military base at Lawton, Okla., which is Fort Sill, is considering a military theme park also.
