View Full Version : Now that it's out, is 197 a bust?

So after seeing the chono stats at 400-500 fps slower than we all thought, can we start to lean toward the 197 being a bust? I mean, we were all calling the 196 complete and total poop at just a mere 100 fps slower than the 197 is at... I know 100 fps is better than nothing; but seriously, the 196 is moving almost 95% as fast as what we all thought was going to be the Holy Grail of ammo, the 197.

So now what? I think unfortunately, we all put our hope "eggs" in one basket. Now our bubble has burst. Do we start pushing Wolf to step up with a more potent round? Do we go back to 195? (I know that I'm glad I still have 400+ rounds of 195 saved up.) Do we concentrate on handloading? Do we shy away from making the 5.7 a primary carry weapon? Do we pressure FN to make a 198 that punches that 40 grain bullet to a true Mach 2? Or do we eat crow and admit that the 197 might not be so bad because the 196 wasn't really a sucky as we all claimed it was? ;)

I know we were all hoping that cheap, plentiful, and potent 197SR was going to bring the FiveseveN and the 5.7x28 at least a little more into the mainstream. I can't help but think that FN let us down by dumbing down the 197 to a level that is disappointing 5.7 loyalists and quietly getting the snickers of the anti-5.7 trolls.

Let's hear what everyone thinks!

We really don't have enough testing data on the SS197 yet to know whether or not it's a good defensive round. I advise we wait and see what comes along, and stick with SS195 in the meantime. At least the SS197 will make a better alternative than SS196, when the SS195 is out of stock.

Frankly, we don't know anything until there is some actual testing of the rounds in properly calibrated gel and vs various intermediate barriers, ie clothes. I have not even seen good data for the -196.
The only data I've seen is the -192, and by proxy the -195, does not meet FBI penetration standards. Some people don't care about that, but I do. That's the main reason I don't keep my 5.7 by the nightstand.

I think it's to early to make a call on the SS197. It has not been out long enough to get a lot of feedback about what the round is doing. My advice is if you have doubts about the round stick with the SS195. I don't think you'll hear any snickers about it.

And if you are really stressed out, pony up the $50.00 and get a box of 192.

Why not just buy a bunch of the cheapest ammo, shoot it, then reload it with whatever bullets you like?

I'm waiting to see who will make good 28gr. bullets for reloading :)

Reloading is the best option. I just bought a box of 197. I am dissapointed if it is only 100FPS faster than 196. I just buy the ammo for the brass anyway. I hope we will have good bullets for reloading in the future. I like Barnes solids 35 grains. All we can do is hope for good ammo at a good price in the future. Maybee we all should get together and form an ammo manufacturing company. I am sure there are people with the skills here.

Some just don't have the time to reload. As for an ammo company the legal problems for even selling reloaded ammo is more than most would want to deal with.

There is no information or indication from FNH USA that SS195 is in any danger of being discontinued. And 35.00 a box is NOT good, it scalping..dealer cost is 16.08 a box from one supplier I order from.....safe to say 35 is 15 too high.

Please don't post the same question in multiple posts. It makes it hard to keep track. :)

You might try Midway or Natchez, or one of the online auctions on Gunbroker. Another place to look is Gunsamerica. As p99 said the price you quoted was to high. SS195 should be about $20 a box max.

Are you guys absolutely sure? I've seen the Fiochi SS197 stuff advertised in two different places at 2000+ fps with the 40gr Hornady V-MAX. Are they lying? After reading what you've seen, I'm starting to think so!

Yes, we have SS197 chronograph figures from FNH USA, David Fortier of SGN, and from one of our members (R-71) in THIS THREAD (http://fivesevenforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1535). It runs about 1700 fps out of the Five-seveN pistol and 2100 fps out of the PS90. If you see the SS197 advertised at 2000+ fps it's either deception or (more likely) old info on the part of the advertiser. FN was originally saying SS197 should be about 2000 fps, so that's possibly where the advertisers are getting their claims.

I would not say they are lying. They just don't have the facts we do. :)

I agree with Tanneritekid, most fps stats you see on line are based on the P90/PS90 not the FiveseveN.

Most of the SS197 advertisements I've seen online or in online auctions are referencing velocity out of the Five-seveN, not PS90. Some examples:

This is FN SS197 5.7 X 28 Ballistic tip ammo. Each box contains 50 rounds. Each Box Is Sealed The Way It Came From The Mfg.
Specs:
Function: SS197 Round
Bullet Type: V-Max Balistic Tip
Color Code: Blue
Length: 40.5mm (1.6 in)
Weight of Round: (105 gr.)
Weight of Projectile: (40 gr.)
Muzzle Velocity: Five-Seven (1850 fps ++)
hi this is a drastic improvement over the initial ss196 ,it is loaded to 1950 foot per second instead of 1650.
FN 5.7 SS197 ammo . This is the new sporting round from fnh in 5.7x28mm. This new stuff is pretty hot it is uploaded from 1650 with ss196 TO A GOOD HARD 1950 FOOT PEr SECCOND WITH THE NEW BALLISTIC TIPPED FNH AMMO.
