View Full Version : Need help with CH Dies please
01-21-2006, 06:12 PM
I just acquired a set of CH dies for the 5.7 and am trying to size the cases. However whenever I size the brass, the neck gets crushed. My understanding CH dies had some problems, any suggestions?
Much thanks in advance for your help.

Member Medula Oblongata knows a lot about reloading the 5.7 and I'm sure if contacted could help you with your problem.

Thank you for all your help!
I am embarrased to say, as someone who has been reloading for years (mostly popular rife and pistol caliber) I was crushing the necks because I had the sizing button up too high, but since I have lowered it that problem has gone away, however new problems have developed since.
I noticed these dies are quite tempermental and not like what I am used to in setup such as with Redding dies, I would screw the die all the way down to the shell plate and then back off about half a turn. If I were to do this with the CH dies, it will size, but the sizing button does not even touch the case mouth thereby leaving the neck extremely tight in which causes problems later on in seating (bullet will crush the neck).
After hours of experimenting with different settings (and a bunch of crushed cases) I finally found a reasonable setting in which does not cause problems in seating, but I would still have to be very careful in positioning the bullet when seating. After chambering a few rounds, I noticed the bullet would be pushed back, sometimes to the point where it would be dangerous to shoot.
Any pointers or should I just get the RCBS dies, if get the RCBS, which ones, Midway has several types and are they much simpler to use? I have read some negative things on RCBS on this forum as well.
Thanks again for any assistance.

I have RCBS small base, loaded 200 rds. and all ran thru my PS 90 no problem. I used data from the VV 3n37 thread. Lots of info here on this forum, Thanks!

I've loaded several hundred rounds with the RCBS dies with no problem, as long as I lube the cases. I also roll my neck brush on the lube pad and lube the inside of the case, roll the brush every 2-3 cases. One of the most important things I've learned is if you're going to crimp them do it very lightly or else you'll crush the neck.
